Paul S. Auerbach, MD, is the Redlich Family Professor of Surgery in the Division of Emergency Medicine at Stanford University. His is the world’s leading authority on wilderness medicine and is one of the world’s leading authorities on emergency medicine. A graduate of Duke University and Duke University School of Medicine, as well as the Stanford Graduate School of Business, Dr. Auerbach is editor of the definitive medical textbook, Wilderness Medicine, and authors several other outdoor/emergency medicine books. He is an attending physician in the emergency department at Stanford University Hospital, where he is Director of Special Projects, teaches emergency medicine, and is involved in a number of research projects.

A team of doctors and nurses from Stanford University Hospital responded to the 2010 earthquake in Haiti. In the first two weeks after the earthquake, they were faced with mass devastation, thousands of patients, and very limited resources. Their experiences were life-changing, and have led many of them to devote more time to international medicine. The world is in need of “white coat diplomats.” This presentation will explain what the team faced in Haiti, pose lessons learned, and look to the future of what will be necessary to respond more effectively to future catastrophic events.
