The Celebration Stem Cell Centre is hosting a “family fun day” carnival on Saturday, May 4th, 2013 to help raise awareness and to assist a local family with the costs associated with a life-saving stem cell transplant.  Little Noah Swanson, a charming three year old boy suffers from an extremely rare disorder called Myelodyspatic Syndrome (aka.  Pre-Leukemia).  He will be receiving an umbilical cord blood stem cell transplant at Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale in the next few months.  Noah’s doctors could not find a suitable bone marrow donor, but they found several suitable umbilical cord blood donors!

Noah’s condition is fatal if he does not receive a stem cell transplant.  If successful, he has the potential to live a normal, healthy life!  The family does have medical insurance, but their out of pocket expenses for Noah’s life-saving procedure is expected to exceed $50,000.

Umbilical cord blood is typically being discarded at the time of birth, due to the simple fact that most people don’t know that it can be banked for future use.  Current data shows that cryopreserved cord blood stem cells can be used for therapy twenty years after the birth of the baby!  Just think about the opportunity that is lost when the cord blood is not privately banked or donated!

We can all help make a difference!
